Branko Ivankovic Looks For Alternatives In Injury-Hit Iran's Match Against Portugal - Ali Daei Uncertainty

Branko Ivankovic, Iran's head coach, is looking for alternatives to replace Iran's captain and top goalscorer in the world Ali Daei, who is suffering from a back injury.

"Ali Daei did not train today because of a back injury. I think it is very hard for him to play against Portugal," Ivankovic said.

Ali Karimi, Mehdi Mahdavikia and Ferydoon Zandi trained with the squad today, raising hopes that they will be fit for Iran's crucial match against Portugal. Mahdavikia has been improving steadily and Ivankovic said that he will probably start.

"Karimi's injury is the old one and he has had problems with it but I think he will be okay for Portugal," Iran's coach said, hinting that he will wait until the last minute to see if the captain will be fit for the match.

Playing down criticism about Iran's goalkeeper Ebrahim Mirzapour, Brankovic stood by his player by saying that his performance prior to the goal where he slipped was outstanding.
