Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Derbyshire is out of the England U-21 squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Spain U-21 at Derby, after he picked up a thigh strain during Rovers’ 2-1 win against Sheffield United on Saturday.

20-year-old Derbyshire was substituted in the 17th minute at Ewood Park.

Rovers manager Mark Hughes fears Derbyshire could in fact, be sidelined for up to three weeks.

It would mean a cruel blow for Derbyshire, who has been in good form this season, as his first U-21 call-up comes to an end abruptly.
