Swiss international left-back Bruno Berner has joined Blackburn Rovers from Basle after impressing Rovers boss Mark Hughes in his recent week-long trial with the Premiership side.

The 29-year-old defender secured the move on Tuesday on an 18-month deal from the Swiss side for what has been reported as a nominal transfer fee, with Rovers having the option of a years extension to his contract.

Berner, who has earned 16 caps for Switzerland, will be ineligible to play in Europe for Blackburn when they face Bayer Leverkusen in their UEFA Cup tie on 14 February as he has already featured in the competition for his former club FC Basle.

He becomes Mark Hughes’ third defensive signing of the transfer window following fellow left-back Stephen Warnock’s move to Ewood Park from Liverpool and DR Congo international defender Christopher Samba from Hertha Berlin.

Hughes has also secured the services of experienced midfielder David Dunn from Birmingham City.
