Amidst injury gloom with four players ruled out for the friendly against Germany on Wednesday, England boss Steve McClaren was however happy with the presence of former captain David Beckham at training on Monday.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, Tottenham striker Darren Bent, Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves and Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell are all ruled out for the Wembley clash with injuries.

LA Galaxy midfielder Beckham meanwhile has put his ankle problem behind him to link up with his team-mates at London Colney.

McClaren was optimistic that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star can cope up with his club career in US and Three Lions duty.

"I think David can combine playing out there and coming here,” said McClaren.

"I understand everyone's concern about that - but the proof will be not just in his performances but also in training.

"When we brought him back (last time) in the Monday training session, there was a lot of pressure on him and a lot of people looking. His performance in training got rid of the doubts.

"We will know that. That is what we assess. It is not just in games we look at him, it is in training as well."
