Australia's Matildas To Play Mexico Before The Socceroos Friendly Encounter Against Greece In MaySubmitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 19/04/2006 - 15:14.
Australia's ‘Matildas’ will play Mexico prior to the Socceroos’ international friendly encounter with European champions Greece at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 25. In an historic double-header, the Matildas will kick off at 4.30pm (local time) against Mexico, with the Socceroos facing Greece in a World Cup warm-up match in the same stadium at 7.30pm. The match against Greece will be Australia's final match before Guus Hiddink’s team heads to Germany for the 2006 World Cup Finals, which kick-off on June 9. As for the Australian ladies, the clash against Mexico will provide the Matildas with valuable build-up to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women's Championships to be held in Adelaide, Australia in late July. “This match is vital preparation for the tournament in Adelaide with Mexico a very accomplished opponent,” said Matilda's coach Tom Sermanni. “The players have spent a lot of time in camp in recent months and it's important to test ourselves against international opposition in a match environment. The nations have met on four occasions with Australia’s Matildas winning three and Mexico winning once. The Matildas are currently ranked 15th in the World rankings while Mexico are 26th. in favorites | email this page
