Australia & Liverpool FC Striker Harry Kewell Faces Possible Ban For Referee Insult

Harry Kewell risks missing the final Socceroos World Cup match in Group F, after FIFA decided to take action against the player for insulting Marcus Merk after the end of the Brazil v Australia match.

The German referee wrote in the official match report about the incident with Harry Kewell, when the latter rushed to the referee after the final whistle was blown and started an aggressive, finger-pointing discussion against him.

The player told reporters at the post-match press conference that nothing major had happened between him and Marcus Merk and that referees on such important matches can understand the frustration, however things proved much different.

FIFA's Director of Communications Markus Siegler said today that the case is being dealt with from FIFA's Disciplinary Committee and that Kewell was notified to submit his explanations. The Liverpool striker did not get booked, as the match had already finished, but he went to complain about the number of fouls given against Australia.

The official match statistics indicate that Marcus Merk, one of the most experienced referees in the Germany World Cup, gave 25 fouls against the Socceroos and only 9 against Brazil.
