Despite a mass of media speculation, Atlético Madrid have yet again denied reports that Spain World Cup striker Fernando Torres is about to sign for Manchester United.

The 22-year-old Spanish international has been linked with as much as a £25million (€34million) switch to Old Trafford as Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks to sign a replacement for disgruntled Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy who, according to latest reports, is said to have secured a move to Real Madrid during the weekend.

Atlético, knowing that it will be hard to keep Torres if the price is right, will be determined to try and put too high a price on their prize asset to try and put-off potential bidders, and maintaining that he is not for sale.

“I do not speak about the rumours in the press, but I would reiterate that Fernando Torres is not for sale,” said Atlético Director General Miguel Angel Gil to skysports.com.

“Not for all the money in the world.”

Atlético manager Javier Aguirre added: “The club has told me that El Nino (Torres' nickname) will play this season with us.

“I am preparing all our schemes with his presence in Atlético.”
