According to press reports, sources at Chelsea have dismissed Argentina striker Hernan Crespo's claims that he has been offered a new contract with the Premiership champions.

The 30-year-old Argentina star, who has played for Parma, Lazio, Inter Milan and AC Milan, is said to want to return to Italy, but suggested Chelsea had recently wanted him to sign a new deal.

In an interview in the Argentine daily La Nacion on Thursday, Crespo was quoted as saying: “Although I have two years still on my contract, they offered me a renewal, they're making me a proposal for when I'm 33 years old.”

Before leaving to join the Argentina squad in their World Cup preparations, Crespo said: "I don't know. My intention would be to return to Italy or (go to) Spain. At Chelsea they know that, over and above my being happy there,"

But, with the possible signing of Ukraine star Andrei Shevchenko, the same sources have said that Crespo is among those who will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge, especially if Shevchenko signs from AC Milan.
