Argentina look like they will be without Barcelona star Lionel Messi for their opening match in the World Cup Finals against Ivory Coast.

Despite expecting to be fit in time for Argentina’s World Cup opener, teenage superstar Lionel Messi does not think he will be fit in time to feature in the Group C match against Ivory Coast.

The 18-year-old Albiceleste player has not played competitively since picking up a thigh injury in March although he is expected to recover in time for the game on the 10th of June.

In an interview, Messi stated his doubts about making the team for the opening tie.

“I don’t think I’ll be in the team. I haven’t played much, I’ve been out of action for some time,” he said.

“I know I still have some way to go, but I’m relaxed, I know I have to keep working and feel better each day.

“I think I’ll get into rhythm in the time left before the World Cup. I want to play the final and I hope we meet Brazil.”

Messi’s view was re-iterated by coach Joe Pekerman who said Messi was getting “better everyday” in the build up.

“But we don’t want to make mistakes with his recovery,” said Albiceleste boss Pekerman.
