Man-Utd manager sir Alex Ferguson told reporters that he feared that the United defender will probably miss next year's World Cup 2006 tournament in Germany.

Gabriel Heinze sustained cruciate knee ligament damage in Manchester United's UEFA Champions League match against Villarreal back in September and according to his manager will most certainly miss the World Cup.

"I know Gaby wants to play in the World Cup, every player would want that, but I can't see it myself. I would have thought it was very unlikely he would play before the end of the season. My stance is that he won't be available until next year."

"I would have thought it was very, very unlikely for him to be playing this season. I don't think he will be available until next season, that's what my stance on that is," Ferguson told reporters.

The Argentine international defender has played 28 times for Argentina and is considered as one of the "success factors" when Argentina progressed to the Final at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup Germany.

The news dealt a blow to Argentina's coach Jose Pekerman plans for next summer's tournament. The Argentinean national team are in what is considered as the toughest group and will face the Ivory Coast, Serbia & Montenegro and Holland.
