Aragones Names Squad For Spain's World Cup Qualifiers V Belgium & San Marino- Reyes,Villa & Mista RecalledSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 06/10/2005 - 10:15.
Spain Coach Luis Aragonés has named his squad for Spain's two World Cup Europe Zone Group 7 qualifying matches, starting away against Belgium on Saturday, and then with the squad travelling to San Marino for their match next Wednesday, the 12th of October. Spain are trailing the current Group 7 leaders Serbia & Montenegro by two points going into the penultimate round of fixtures. On Saturday all could be resolved, when Spain face Belgium in Brussels and Serbia take on Lithuania in Vilnius. A loss for Spain, and a win for Serbia and Montenegro will mean that Serbia will win the group, and get automatic qualification for the finals next summer in Germany. With Chelsea FC’s Asier Del Horno, Espanyol’s Raul Tamudo, Newcastle United’s Albert Luque and Liverpool’s Fernando Morientes all out injured, and fellow Liverpool player Xabi Alonso suspended, it has added to Coach Aragonés worries before the games. With these injuries, it has meant a recall to the squad for Arsenal FC’s Jose Antonio Reyes, Valencia’s David Villa and Miguel Mista, and Deportivo la Coruna’s Joan Capdevila. Valencia’s Rubens Baraja returns after injury, and David Albelda comes back in after a one-match suspension, making it six Valencia players in the squad in total. The Spanish will need to win both games to be guaranteed a place in the top two of the group, which would earn them a play-off place for a berth in the finals. If Spain win both of their two games they could overtake Serbia if their rivals lose against either Lithuania or Bosnia. Defeat against Belgium, however, may mean the Spaniards miss out on the finals for the first time since 1974.
