Aragones Names 33-man Spain Squad - Chelsea's Del Horno & Valencia's Canizares Get Recall - Oubina, Cani, & Gavilan Get ChanceSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Sat, 08/04/2006 - 00:45.
Spain head coach Luis Aragonés has given a last-chance call for fresh talent when he included five new players in his 33-man squad for a World Cup get-together on April 10. Celta Vigo's Borja Oubina, Real Zaragoza's Cani and Getafe's Jaime Gavilan have all been rewarded by the call-up for their impressive performances in midfield for their clubs. In defence Real Betis's Melli and Villarreal's Javi Venta have also been called up. Valencia goalkeeper Santiago Canizares, who has dropped behind Liverpool's Jose 'Pepe' Reina as the number two goalkeeping choice to Real Madrid's Iker Casillas, has earned a recall. 36-year-old Canizares has earned 44 caps for the Furia Roja, but has not played for the Spanish national side since 2004. Chelsea fullback Asier del Horno wins back his place after being dropped for last month's friendly against 3-2 win over Ivory Coast. Making room for the newcomers were Barcelona duo Victor Valdes and Oleguer, while Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera and midfielder Guti, who is no doubt assured of a place in the squad for the Finals, also missed out. Barcelona midfielder Xavi and Valencia winger Vicente, who have been out with knee and ankle injuries respectively, are close to making full returns for their sides and are also, depending on fitness, certainties for the squad. Spain captain Raul, though back in first-team action at Real Madrid after a knee injury, is still short of form and has found strating line-up opportunities restricted. The team will meet up for the day in Madrid on Monday. Spain have been drawn alongside Ukraine, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia in Group H at the World Cup which begins on June 9. Spain squad for get-together: Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Santiago Canizares (Valencia) Defenders: Antonio Lopez (Atletico Madrid), Pablo Ibanez (Atletico Madrid), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Juanito (Real Betis), Melli (Real Betis), Asier del Horno (Chelsea), Joan Capdevila (Deportivo Coruna), Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Javi Venta (Villarreal) Midfielders: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), Joaquin (Real Betis), Borja Oubina (Celta Vigo), Ivan de la Pena (Espanyol), Jaime Gavilan (Getafe), Luis Garcia (Liverpool), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), David Albelda (Valencia), Ruben Baraja (Valencia), Vicente (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal), Cani (Real Zaragoza) Forwards: Fernando Torres (Atletico Madrid), Fernando Morientes (Liverpool), Raul (Real Madrid), David Villa (Valencia) in favorites | email this page

spain's 2nd round match against switzerland will be even more testing than ireland in 2002, but i have the suspicion that this spanish team will overcome the hang-ups of the past.
