Brazilian police briefly detained the former Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona on Thursday at Rio de Janeiro's international airport, after arguing with police following his late arrival for a flight back to Argentina.

Maradona, who was detained by Brazilian Federal Police for “showing contempt to authorities”, was trying to return to Argentina after playing in a charity football match organized by Zico, a former Brazil star, and coach of the Japan national soccer squad.

Federal Police spokesman Carlos de Melo confirmed that Maradona was not charged with any offence at the time. He was later released after being questioned, and returned to Argentina later in the day.
