Africa Zone Group 4: Angola Hoping To Qualify Ahead Of Nigerias Super EaglesSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 07/10/2005 - 18:51.
Africa Zone Group 4: A win in Rwanda, and Angola will be crowned winners of Group 4, and qualify for their first ever World Cup Finals, meaning the displacement of the once mighty Nigeria, who will miss out on the finals for the first time since their first ever appearance in the World Cup in U.S.A 94. Angola’s Palancas Negras have stuuned all the other teams in the group apart from Nigeria, including the much fancied Zimbabwe, and one of the previous favourites in the group Algeria. The fact that Angola are so close to Germany is, for Angolan’s, the stuff of legends, given that they began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-1 loss in Chad, and a 2-0 win at home, and they only managed to get to the final group stage due to the away-goal rule, thus eliminating Chad, one of the weakest National teams in Africa. Angola then proved its worth by beating Nigeria in Luanda and drawing in Abuja to establish a head-to-head advantage. Nigeria lost their grip on the group's leadership when Angola held them to that 1-1 draw in June, and now top the group. But Angola’s Coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves refuses to take bottom-placed Rwanda for granted in their match in Kigali. Angola have not won away in five outings and a lack of experience could trigger panic should they fall behind. Nigeria can squeeze through if Angola slip-up against Rwanda, while Zimbabwe could beat both teams to the top-spot if they win by four goals or more against Nigeria, and Rwanda collect maximum points. in favorites | email this page
