Africa Zone Group 3 Overview - Cameroon Hope To Qualify For Record Sixth Consecutive FinalsSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 07/10/2005 - 17:54.
Africa Zone Group 3 Overview: Cameroon are on the verge of an African record fifth consecutive World Cup appearance. They lead long-time pacesetters Ivory Coast by a point and finish with a home fixture against Egypt while stubborn Sudan host the Ivory Coast. The Elephants of the Cote D'Ivoire were favourites to qualify for their first ever World Cup finals had they beaten the Cameroon in their last home match, which Cameroon won 3-2 to take them above the Cote D'Ivoire to the top of Group 3 in the Africa Zone. With Cameroon playing Egypt at home in Yaounde, and likely to win, the Ivory Coast must win their African Zone Group 3 match against Sudan to have any chance of qualifying for next year's World Cup finals in Germany. The Ivorians will hope that forwards Aruna Dindane and Chelsea's Didier Drogba can keep up their fine strike pairing, which has netted them 14 goals between them in nine World Cup qualifying matches. At one stage Cameroon were five points behind Ivory Coast, but a heroic comeback was crowned by a 3-2 triumph in Abidjan last month courtesy of an Achille Webo hat-trick. Given the poor record of Egypt south of the Sahara there seems little likelihood of them stopping Cameroon. in favorites | email this page
