AC Milan Legend & 'Oranje' Coach Marco Van Basten Boosts Salomon Kalou's Appeal for Dutch CitizenshipSubmitted by Matt Vance on Mon, 28/11/2005 - 23:12.
Attempts by Salomon Kalou, the Cote D’Ivoire-born striker who is trying to have his application for Dutch citizenship fast-tracked before FIFA World Cup Germany 2006, have received a significant boost following the support of 'Oranje' coach, and Holland legend Marco Van Basten. Kalou, who has been playing for Feyenoord since 2003, has already had his application refused on two previous occasions. Immigration minister Rita Verdonk has argued that Kalou will leave Holland for a bigger club as soon as he is granted citizenship and therefore should not receive any special consideration. However, the support of ex-Ajax and AC Milan striker Van Basten – who will be coaching the Dutch squad at next year’s finals – will prove a considerable fillip in Kalou’s attempts to have the previously refused applications overturned. “Salomon has exceptional skills and qualities. If he is granted a Dutch passport, he will make a huge difference for our World Cup team,” Van Basten told the Dutch court hearing the case. The result of the appeal will be announced on 9 December, the same day as the draw for the finals takes place in Leipzig. in favorites | email this page
